Austin favorite Lady Leader Barbara Jordan by Pretzel & Harvey

My partner and I feel that Barbara Jordan was a important Austin leader.She was the black woman to be elected to theTexas Legislature and Congress.She went to Phillis Wheatly High School and Texas Southern University in Houston.At Congress she helped pass laws for the poor.She died this year, after coming to live in Austin.

Barbara Jordan:

  • born 1936 in Houston
  • served in the Texas Senate from 1966 to 1972
  • member of House of Reps. from 1973 to 1979
  • she became the first black key-note speakerat a national convention of the Dem. party in 1974
  • was on the committe hearing to consider the impeachment of President Nixon in 1974
  • 1979 became professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson school of Public Affairs in the University of Texas at Austin
